GONZALES - The proposed toll road connecting Livingston and Ascension Parishes is gaining steam, and construction could become a reality a year from now.
An elevated toll way would connect Highway 42 near 933 in Ascension and Highway 447, commonly known as Pete's Highway in Livingston.
Parish leaders were given approval from the Department of Transportation and Development to create a toll authority consisting of representatives from both parishes and the state to study to feasibility of the $40 million project.
Ascension Parish President Tommy Martinez said forming that group will take three to four months, and studying the environmental impacts, land acquisition and right of way six to eight months after that.
The payout on the $40 million tab would run a span of 20 years, and after, funds generated from the toll would go toward paying for other parish road improvements.
