DONALDSONVILLE- State Senator Troy Brown is clearing confusion, he said, was spawned by a coincidence of political chatter and highway work.
People who use the Sunshine Bridge connecting St. James and Ascension Parishes over the Mississippi River believe tolls booths are being installed.
"When people drive past and see the construction work being done, they assume that the plans for reinstating a toll have moved forward," Brown said. "This is not the case."
When lawmakers met in Baton Rouge for the legislative session earlier this year, he expressed an intent to try to return tolls to the bridge. The plan never moved forward, and crossing the river remains free.
The work near the bridge is for general upkeep, reinforcement of the structure, and the addition of turning lanes.
