BATON ROUGE - Nationwide, Turkey Day can be a dangerous day, even if you never leave your home.

Thousands of fires are reported every year on Thanksgiving Day, most caused by cooking. One of the major hazards includes frying turkeys.

Firefighters in Baton Rouge had these important points for people who will attempt to fry a turkey this year:

· Be outdoors in a well-ventilated area; under a carport or in a garage is not outdoors.
· Be careful not to use too much oil, which can overflow and ignite on the burner.
· Remember to thaw the turkey completely before putting in into the fryer.

"Water and oil don't mix," said Curt Monto with the Baton Rouge Fire Department. "[If] you drop a frozen turkey into fryer, it's going to start a fire."

It's also important to keep a fire extinguisher handy. Chief Training Officer Scotty Shelton says to also check the pressure on your extinguisher before starting up the fryer. Then, he says follow the rules of "PASS":

Pull the Pin
Aim the fire extinguisher at the fire's base
Sweep the fire extinguisher
Side to Side

"You want to be between a fire and an exit," Sheldon said. "If you're outside you also want to be upwind, because there's nothing worse than discharging a fire extinguisher and having it come back in your face."

But a fire extinguisher doesn't make you a firefighter. Always call 911 when a fire breaks out, and get to safety if it grows too large.

Firefighters also recommend storing your extinguisher in a part of the home that's not prone to fires. That way, if a fire starts, you can still access the extinguisher without being in harm's way.
