Tigers face Kentucky for Friday at the Box
BATON ROUGE - Second-ranked LSU takes on No. 7 Kentucky tonight for the start of their weekend series at Alex Box Stadium.
LSU (27-2, 8-1 SEC) has won nine straight games going into the series and is tied with Vanderbilt for the overall SEC lead.
It's only the second time in school history the Tigers began their season with a 27-2 record. The last time was back in 1986.
"We're looking forward to a tremendous matchup of Top 10 teams this weekend," said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. "Kentucky is an extremely talented team with three excellent left-handed starting pitchers and some outstanding players in their lineup. Last season, we were No. 1 and they were No. 2 when we met in Lexington, and it was a very competitive series. I would expect more of the same this weekend, but this time we get to play in front of our great fans."
Mainieri said that sophomore right-hander Aaron Nola and junior right-hander Ryan Eades will start the first two games of the series on the mound for LSU. The Tigers' Game 3 starter is undecided.
Kentucky coach Gary Henderson will counter with a trio of southpaws - sophomore A.J. Reed, senior Jerad Grundy and junior Corey Littrell.
News 2's Friday at the Box coverage starts at 6 p.m. The first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday night.
