LAWRENCE, Kan. - Tiger Park has been honored with the prestigious Field of the Year award by the Sports Turf Managers Association (STMA) for the college and university softball division.

LSU has started the 2013 season with a 10-1 mark, the program's best start since the 2007 season. The Tigers have secured nine of their 10 wins at Tiger Park on the season and have compiled a 104-27-1 record in the facility since the ballpark opened its gates prior to the 2009 season.

Tiger Park is maintained by the LSU Athletics Grounds Crew and Eric Fasbender, the Assistant Director of Athletic Facility and Grounds.

"I'm tremendously honored to have Tiger Park recognized in this manner by the STMA," Fasbender said. "This award is a testament to our staff and the hard work that they put in behind the scenes. Whether the sun is shining or the rain is falling, they are out there to make sure the LSU athletic fields play their best for our student athletes. It is truly an honor to have Tiger Park recognized as one of the best fields in the country."

"The dedication and commitment shown by Eric and his staff are one of the many reasons why Tiger Park is the best softball facility in the nation," head coach Beth Torina said. "We're extremely happy to see Tiger Park be recognized and are very appreciative of the long hours that Eric and his staff put in day in and day out to keep Tiger Park beautiful."

The STMA Field of the Year Award program began in 1992 and there are five field types for which awards may be given: Baseball, Football, Soccer, Softball and Sporting Grounds (Lacrosse, Rugby, Field Hockey and Tennis). For each field type, awards may be given in three categories: Professional, College and University, and Schools and Parks. This year there were a total of just 11 awards presented.

"The Field of the Year Award validates the intense dedication of our members," said Kim Heck, CEO of the Sports Turf Managers Association. "Each year the STMA awards no more than 13 Fields of the Year, so a very small percentage of our members are winners. Eric and his crew are very deserving of this prestigious award for Tiger Park."

The STMA Field of the Year awards was presented at the Annual STMA Awards Banquet during the 24th Annual STMA Conference and Exhibition in Daytona Beach, Fla. last month.
