PORT ALLEN - A cylinder of nitrogen exploded and injured three workers at a Port Allen gas plant this morning, according to the West Baton Rouge Parish Fire Department.

Chief Rick Boudreaux said they were called to the Airgas plant at 9:48 a.m. after the cylinder exploded.  He said two workers were taken to the hospital, while a third left on his own to see a doctor.

Boudreaux said firefighters checked the other cylinders nearby for damage that might compromise them, but didn't find any.

The plant is conducting an internal investigation to determine what caused the cylinder to explode.
