Thousands mourn as deputy laid to rest

LAPLACE - Thousands of deputies and police officers from nearly every corner of the state showed up to lay St. John Deputy Jeremy Triche to rest today.

"It hurt, because they're out there supporting us and they're gonna get their life taken the way they did, no one deserves to die like that," said Esther Chedville, who lined Airline Highway to show respect for the fallen deputy.

Triche and Deputy Brandon Nielsen were killed Thursday morning while investigating the shooting of another deputy. Two other deputies were wounded in those shootings.

Triche was due to celebrate his 28th birthday today, but instead, friends, family, and total strangers celebrated his life, ended too soon.

"I don't understand why, I don't understand what those people were feeling that they had to take his life, and then he had a two-year-old, and that two-year-old will never know his father," said Denise Treas, who watched the procession with her young son.

Nielsen will be laid to rest on Wednesday at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home in New Orleans.
