Thieves steal safe from church
WALKER- Police are looking for leads after a church was burglarized and a 300-pound safe stolen overnight.
Police were called when workers at Walker Baptist Church on Florida Boulevard noticed the crime when they got to work earlier in the day.
"It appears that the offenders entered the church building through an unsecured window," said Walker Police Capt. John Sharp.
The thieves stole money from a cash box and the church's entire safe. The money in the cash box was intended for the youth group's summer trips.
"That was the bulk of the money that was stolen, was money turned in by children and parents, to help take care of expenses for trips coming up," said Rev. Randy Powell.
Powell hopes to use the crime as a learning experience.
"Our hope and prayer is that this event will draw our church closer together and more united to be a better influence in our community," said Powell.
Police asked people to contact them if noticed anything suspicious around the church Wednesday night after 11 and before Thursday morning about 3:30.
If you'd like to make a donation to the church contact Walker Baptist at (225) 665-8368.
