Terrebonne Parish closer to widening bridge
HOUMA - Terrebonne Parish residents frustrated by the Westside Boulevard Bridge will be getting relief.
At Monday night's Terrebonne Parish Council meeting, The Courier reports the council voted unanimously to accept ownership of the bridge and turn it into a four-lane, two-way bridge to ease traffic.
Councilman Greg Hood says the one-way bridge has been a nuisance for motorists for some time.
When Westside Boulevard was extended last year, the state made the bridge one-way.
The council approved Hood's proposal to purchase the additional land needed to connect the bridge on both sides in April. The transfer will give the parish about $51,000 from the state to maintain the bridge.
Parish President Michel Claudet said it's clear the bridge doesn't work well as a one-way span, and widening it will help avoid problems.
