BATON ROUGE - Area teens learned first hand about the dangers of drinking and driving and texting behind the wheel at "Celebrate My Drive," an annual event sponsored by State Farm and observed around the country.

Sponsors celebrate a big milestone in a teens life - getting a drivers license. In their first year of driving, teenagers have 10 times the number of accidents as adults. With the addition of new technology, texting has become a drivers latest distraction.

"You shouldn't text and drive," said teen driver Karlyn Holden. "You need to pay full attention to the road and where you're going."

Teenagers participated in a driving simulation while wearing "drunk goggles." The goggles impair a person's vision, like one's vision would be if under the influence behind the wheel.

Rebecca Dornier is a few months away from getting her license and says the drunk goggles gave her a good idea of what it's like to be drunk and driving.

"It was actually really hard to see," said Dornier. "It felt like everything was far away."

The simulator is run by Juvenile Outreach Coordinator for the District Attorney's Office Kelly Bonaventure.

"It really touches home to a lot of the teens because they do realize that they did not drive as well as they thought they were going to," said Bonaventure.

Also in attendence was the Baton Rouge Fire Department and State Police.
