DENHAM SPRINGS - Three teenagers are in custody following a series of burglaries in the Denham Springs area this week, shocking victims as they awoke.
"I heard a noise in the kitchen, thinking it was it was a family members, I went to the kitchen and that's when I saw someone crawling out of my window," said Tammy Broom, a victim of the burglaries.
Hayven Nugent and Kemo Amos, both 17, and an unidentified 16-year-old face charges including aggravated burglary, resisting an officer and felony theft.
One victim actually chased the suspects with a gun and helped identify their vehicle. It's a move Livingston Parish Sheriff Jason Ard is grateful for, but strongly cautions against.
"You've got to be careful how you get involved," Ard said. "We try to stress, slow down, get the information we need."
The suspects fled the scene after deputies tried to stop their vehicle. They later crashed the vehicle, which was reported stolen, before taking off on foot. Deputies eventually caught up with all three teens, one of whom was armed.
Investigators searched a nearby hotel room where the suspects were staying and found several stolen items, including iPhones, weapons, cash and jewelry.
Sheriff Ard said the teens lived about three hours away from the area, so deputies are still looking into why they chose Denham Springs for their robbery spree.
