Teen killed on downtown Baton Rouge levee
One teenager is dead after gunfire erupted downtown Saturday night.
17-year-old Darius Augustus had just left a haunted house downtown and was with friends when the shots rang out. It happened just before 11 p.m. on River Road near Government Street.
"I'm just devastated, heartbroken. I'm not going to see him no more," said Jennifer Augustus, Darius' mother.
Jennifer spent the night overwhelmed with grief after learning of her son's murder. Just hours before police found him dead, his mother dropped him off blocks away at the haunted house.
"I told him, 'Keep up with the other kids' because they were little, 10 and 12, and he said, 'Okay,' and got out of the car. Now I feel bad because I feel I never should have let him went. I didn't know it was gonna be the last time seeing my child," said Augustus.
Melinda Hausey, a family friend, was just feet away from the scene when she heard the shots.
"You see kids just running, running, everybody falling all over each other, stampling all over each other," said Hausey. "How can you shoot amongst so many innocent people and take their lives, for what reason?"
Now, his mother will never get the chance to see the young boy she calls her prince become a man.
"Now he's gone because someone took his life for no reason, being ignorant and foolish in the streets," said Augustus.
Police still have no suspects or motives at this time. If you have information that could lead to an arrest, contact the Baton Rouge Police Department.
