Teen indicted for murder over girl
BATON ROUGE - A grand jury indicted an 18-year-old on murder charges in connection with a Feb. 11 shooting that investigators said was over a girl.
The grand jury indicted Jamal Variste Wednesday for second-degree murder in the death of 18-year-old Devonta Jenks.
Police said Variste shot Jenks in a fit of jealousy outside of an apartment complex in north Baton Rouge. Investigators said they believe the shooting came as a result of a dispute between Jenks and Variste over a mutual girlfriend who lived at the apartment complex.
Police said the girlfriend was about six months pregnant when Variste shot Jenks.
Variste faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison if found guilty of the murder.
