BATON ROUGE - Police arrested a 16-year-old overnight after investigators said he accidentally shot a woman, causing life-threatening injuries.

Cpl. Don Coppola with BRPD said the shooting happened while the 19-year-old victim and the 16-year-old were in a car in the 5000 block of Florida Street. Investigators said the 16-year-old had a gun in the back seat when it accidentally fired, hitting the woman seated in front of him.

Investigators said the woman was found shot in the vehicle outside the College Drive Waffle House around 5:30 p.m. She was taken to a hospital where police said she is in stable condition.

Coppola said the 16-year-old was taken to juvenile detention on charges of negligent injuring and being a juvenile in possession of a firearm.
