Teacher evaluation system could change
BATON ROUGE - Some teachers do not want student test scores weighing heavily on whether they keep their jobs.
A 26-member legislative subcommittee met Tuesday to finalize recommendations to the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education on how to improve the evaluation system. Right now standardized test scores count toward half of teacher evaluations.
Louisiana Association of Educators President Debbie Meaux says the 85 percent of educators surveyed agree that linking teacher evaluations to student test scores is unfair. They want the system to change to better reflect what goes on in classrooms.
"Most of our teachers believe that the current accountability system does not take into account all that they do as teachers. They actually feel as though they are being placed in a box," said Meaux. "We need to make sure that whatever we do we make sure it is something that can be easily implemented, everyone understands it and everyone's on board with it."
The current system has been in place the past three years to drive student improvement. Educators on the committee feel that school principals need to be trusted more to answer if student growth happened instead of just relying on test scores.
BESE will meet next month to evaluate the recommendations made by the committee.
