Teacher accused of hitting student surrenders
ST. FRANCISVILLE - Sheriff's deputies said a teacher accused of slapping and kicking a student in West Feliciana Parish surrendered Monday to an arrest warrant.
Deputies said 31-year-old Chanel Lemelle arrived at the jail with her attorney Monday morning and was booked on the charge. She immediately posted a $20,000 bond.
Investigators said they met with school board members last week to discuss the incident. Other teachers told them Lemelle kicked the student in the butt and slapped him on the back of the head in order to get him to "walk right." They also said she made him sit and eat alone, took food from his plate, and made several comments about sending him back a grade to learn how to walk correctly.
Deputies issued a warrant for her arrest on Jan. 29. She was booked on a single charge of cruelty to a juvenile.
