BATON ROUGE - Sheriff's deputies arrested an East Baton Rouge Parish teacher after they said the woman hit a special needs child several times.

Deputies said Nerelyn Lava Soreta, 50, surrendered Monday to charges of simple battery of the infirm.

Sheriff's office spokesperson Casey Hicks said the child's mother told deputies last week about the incident, which she said happened on Oct. 30 at Jefferson Terrace Elementary. Hicks said deputies were shown a video of Soreta pushing the child's face with her hand and hitting her several times on the leg, and talked to someone who witnessed the incident.

Deputies booked Soreta into the parish prison on battery charges.
