Tax plan would improve Ascension Parish Roads
GONZALES - A proposed half cent sales tax increase could pave the way for infrastructure improvements in Ascension Parish.
The proposal first has to be approved by the parish council before a final decision by voters in November.
The plan would widen Airline Highway to six lanes from Highway 42 eight miles south to Highway 44. It would also improve more than 30 intersections in the parish by adding turning lanes and potentially traffic signals.
The Department of Transportation and Development plans to widen Highway 42 and improve six intersections on their dime.
Eight bridges are in need of repair, and the proposal would fix those.
Other supplemental projects are included in the plan, but the feasibility of those is a long way out.
The parish council will decide whether or not to send the tax plan to voters next Thursday.
