BATON ROUGE - Believe it or not, about 16,000 people don't pay their taxes each year in East Baton Rouge Parish, according to Tax Director Octave Anthaume.
Those who won't get delinquent notices rushed into the Sheriff's Office to pay their property taxes Thursday and Friday, some because of a glitch in the website.
The site, which is offering a website check payment option instead of just by credit card this year, saw double the traffic, and went down for about an hour and a half Thursday, said Anthaume.
The deadline to get property tax payments in was 4:30 p.m. Friday.
If you don't pay your property taxes, you face fines of 1 percent and could lose your property after three years, Anthaume said.
Livingston and Ascension Parishes both have extensions until January 14.
