Tanker explodes at gas station, driver killed
NEW ORLEANS - New Orleans police say a tank truck driver died after his rig struck an SUV going the wrong way down a one-way street, hit a convenience store's sign and exploded.
The accident happened early Friday morning in the St. Roch neighborhood.
Authorities say the truck's cab caught fire after hitting the store's sign. The driver did not make it out of the cab.
Police evacuated some homes in the area, but the residents were allowed to return home just before 6 a.m.
Police say the driver of the car fled the scene and was found at her home. Charges against her are pending.
Neither the victim's name nor that of the SUV's driver was released.
