BATON ROUGE- A 60-year-old marble statue of Jesus was found early Friday morning on Highland Road by a passerby who recognized the statue from the news.

"The local television stations, and your station in particular did a great job of getting the word out and I guess whoever had it, finally figured it out, they weren't going to get rid of it without getting exposed," said Shelly Roy, the statue's owner.

Roy with Roselawn Monuments said police informed him the statue had been found near the business on Highland Road around 2:30 a.m. Friday.

The statue, which was stolen last weekend and valued at around $15,000, didn't appear to be damaged, but neighbors think the people who took it must have been damaged.

"It really has to be a horrible little creep, because I just can't see anybody doing something to something sacred," said Carla Jackson, who's grown up near the statue.

Police are still investigating who hauled off the 500-pound statue, and how it wound up in front of the club.

Roy says the statue will return to it's resting spot, but this time, it will be much harder to move.
