SWAC sits seven Lady Jag hoops players following fight
BATON ROUGE - The Southern Lady Jaguar basketball team will head to the SWAC Tournament in Houston with seven of their players suspended from play.
Following an on court fight between the Southern and Texas Southern women's basketball teams on Saturday, the conference has suspended 15 players from both teams for the upcoming conference tournament.
Southern will sit seven players while Texas Southern has eight players sidelined. Number one seed Texas Southern will not be able to field a team in the conference tournament, despite winning their SWAC's regular season title.
Southern will be forced to take the court missing three of their top five athletes in minutes played.
The SWAC has determined that Southern's Keonia Parrish will miss two games, while Kiana Vines from Texas Southern will also sit for an extra game.
Southern was initially credited with the win because they were leading at the time of the fight and the suspension of play, however Monday night the conference ruled that both teams would suffer a loss. The redacted win drops Southern from a share of the regular season conference title.
Southern will open play in the SWAC Tournament in Houston on Wednesday against Grambling.
Below is a list of the suspended student-athletes.
4 Shaquandria Litmon
5 Jadea Brundidge
12 Yasmine Nelson
15 Jasmine Jefferson
20 Keonia Parrish
23 Kendra Coleman
30 Corteni Purnell
