Suspect surrenders in family shooting
BATON ROUGE - Police said a man wanted on suspicion of shooting and killing his brother-in-law turned himself in to authorities today.
Cpl. Don Coppola said Derrick Bland, 48, surrendered at the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison in connection with the shooting death of James Stockton, 40, outside the victim's apartment on North Lobdell.
Investigators said Bland got into an argument with Stockton during a family party Sunday night and was asked to leave. They said as he and his family were leaving, Bland shot Stockton multiple times and fled the scene on foot.
Detectives said they were still questioning Bland, and that he would be booked on second degree murder charges.
