GROSSE TETE - Police called off a search for a suspect Tuesday afternoon after he jumped and sank into a bayou that authorities believed was too dangerous to follow him into.
At 12:50 on Tuesday morning, an Iberville Parish Deputy pulled a car over containing a driver and passenger on I-10 East for a simple traffic violation.
The passenger fled from the car and ran into the woods.
Deputies then searched the car, found $2500 worth of counterfeit money and arrested the driver, Elesha D. Gunn, 25, of 855 Green Rd., Houston, TX.
IPSO deputies searched the woods for the suspect until 5 a.m. then called off the search.
Authorities then received a tip that a suspicious looking man with wet, muddy clothes was in Grosse Tete.
Deputies arrived to catch the man who then jumped into Bayou Grosse Tete and, according to authorities, quickly went under and never resurfaced.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the search has been suspended due to lack of visibility and underwater terrain danger.
Gunn was charged with monetary instrument abuse.
