PLAQUEMINE - Police said a man accused of attacking his ex-girlfriend with a machete in Plaquemine was arrested Friday afternoon.

Plaquemine Parish said authorities in Ascension Parish arrested 32-year-old Avis Irvin on charges of aggravated assault, stalking, domestic abuse, damaging property, unauthorized entry into a home and fleeing officers.

Police said around 9 a.m. Irvin forced his way into his ex-girlfriend's residence, breaking a window with a machete while she and her children were locked in a room calling for help. Police said Irvin fled before they arrived but they spotted his car later Friday morning, and he led them on a high-speed chase. Police said during the chase a passenger jumped out of Irvin's vehicle, which helped Irvin escape capture.

Investigators said they learned Irvin had been stalking his ex-girlfriend and watching her through the window of her residence. Police said Irvin also told other people he intended to kill the woman and anyone who tried to help her.

Police released Irvin's photo Friday afternoon and said a reward would be offered for his capture. Shortly after, the department said authorities in Ascension Parish had located and arrested Irvin.
