Suspect identified in Baker killing
BAKER - Police asked for the public's help finding a 17-year-old they said was responsible for a murder in Baker Sunday night.
Chief Mike Knaps said officers are looking for Kenard Gaines of Baker in connection with the murder of Kortlon Johnson, 19.
Investigators said witnesses told them Gaines shot Johnson several times during an argument outside a home on Daniels Street, then fled on foot.
"At some point the victim and suspect had an exchange of words, went outside to talk about it. Gunshots came from that," Knaps said.
It's the first murder of the year for Baker, and left residents on the block concerned and scared.
"I was watching television and I heard what sounded like a gunshot and it sounded close," a neighbor on the street who didn't want to be identified told News 2.
Anyone with information about Gaine's whereabouts or this shooting should call Baker Police at (225) 775-6000.
