BATON ROUGE - Classes in Baton Rouge have been in full swing for less than a month, and the superintendent is ready to get a handle on improving attendance and that includes teachers.

"Nobody can teach as good as our teachers," said Superintendent Warren Drake. "We want to make sure that they're at school every day, but mainly we just need everybody there to educate our kids the best we can."

His plan in the next few weeks is to post attendance charts in the front of each school. The records will show the percentage of student attendance and the percentage of teachers that day.

"When you have a 90 percent attendance that may sound like a lot, but that means 10 percent of your kids aren't there," said Superintendent Drake. "That's way too many."

The President of the East Baton Rouge Federation of Teachers, Cornell Washington, said he thinks the chart attendance could be a good idea to encourage students and parents but believes the public display of teacher attendance goes too far.

"I don't think it's the most positive thing to do to encourage teacher attendance, if there is a problem with teacher attendance I think that there are probably other things you can do," said Washington.

Washington said there's already a data system that shows the daily attendance of teachers and doesn't believe that East Baton Rouge school system has a problem. He also said teacher absences are no higher than any other market.

However, Superintendent Drake said he thinks the visual display could go a long way. The superintendent expects to have those charts up on October 1st.
