BATON ROUGE - By June of next year, someone other than Bernard Taylor will run the East Baton Rouge School System.

Taylor's contract will expire next year as scheduled after he requested school board members to not renew his contract. Taylor has almost completed two years of a three-year contract.

"This has not been easy, but I'm at peace," said Taylor. "I feel great about what I've done and what I'm going to do, and I'm looking forward to the year. Like I said, I'm going to be a superintendent somewhere else. This was never my final destination anyway."

Teachers we spoke with say they are now left wondering who will take the reins next as superintendent.

"It's up in the air. We have a lot to look forward to," said Katina Thompson-Givens. "We still have a lot of improvements that we need to make, but overall I think it's still uncertain as to what the expectations are."

Moving forward Taylor says something needs to be done about how they're going to educate all of the children in the parish. He says currently it's more about politics rather than education.

"What I want to spend my next year doing is talking about that exact question," he said. "The issue is how do we rectify educating children north of Florida Boulevard with educating children south of Florida Boulevard. It's time to put that question on the table."

Taylor scored a "satisfactory" overall composite score for last school year based on board member evaluations.
