Suing over captive bears
CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA- Some Native Americans claim grizzly bears are being abused at a roadside zoo, and they plan to sue the operators of the Cherokee Bear Park for violating the federal Endangered Species Act.
Two tribal elders of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians are after some of their own. The bear park is on tribal land. There's been a long-running fight to close bear zoos on the reservation.
Tribal elders and animal rights activists have made repeated appeals to the trial council to no avail. A protest by those groups did close on of the zoos this year.
