Sugarcane league: Keep ATVs out of cane fields

BATON ROUGE - The American Sugar Cane League warns off-road riders to stay out of sugarcane fields and off of farm roads during planting season.

President Mike Daigle says in a news release that it's hard to see nearby ground from the huge combines used for planting - and operators on private land shouldn't have to watch out for trespassing four-wheelers. He says operators may not see a low-profiled ATV crossing ahead of them on interior field roads.

Sugarcane is Louisiana's No. 1 row crop. Last year, 483 growers in 22 parishes harvested more than 14.8 million tons of sugarcane valued at $1 billion. Louisiana's 11 sugar mills produced 3.3 billion pounds of raw sugar.
