BATON ROUGE - The Southern University Board of Supervisors tabled the discussion about an interim chancellor Friday until a further meeting.

The board went into an executive session behind closed doors for more than an hour to debate options for an interim chancellor. System President Ronald Mason Jr. says there were differences in opinion about who is the best person for the job.

"You know there's an ongoing discussion on how to best address the needs of the campus and it was a lively discussion that hasn't finished yet," he said.

The search for a new chancellor comes after the board voted not to renew current Chancellor James Llorens' contract earlier this year. Llorens' contract ends on June 30.

Mason says Llorens will remain chancellor even without a contract until an interim is appointed. Mason feels the interim, if appointed, should be someone who is not interested in a permanent chancellor position. Mason added that a search firm has been hired and a search committee has already met to find a new chancellor.

The process is expected to proceed during the next few months. Mason said the budget issues may force the university to consider merging the system and SUBR campus administrations.

Mason says the special meeting will happen toward the end of the month.
