BATON ROGUE - Southern University's Faculty Senate President says he and other faculty members have raised $9,600 to file an injunction against their own university.

Nearly 75 professors have donated to the cause Sudhir Trivedi said.

Trivedi believes the university illegally declared a financial emergency (or "exigency") in October.  With that emergency declaration comes the university's right to furlough and cut the pay of  tenured faculty members for one year.

Trivedi showed News 2 a document from Chancellor James Llorens dated December 8, 2011 noting that retirement contributions would be smaller because of the financial emergency.

"I hope that it will send the message to all the administrators across Louisiana: don't go file financial exigency unless you truly have financial exigency," Trivedi said.

Trivedi's original goal was $10,000, but raised that goal to $15,000.

Trivedi tells News 2 attorney Jill Craft is considering taking the case.
