SU Board elects new officers for 2015
NEW ORLEANS - The Southern University Board of Supervisors Friday elected Leon R. Tarver II as chairman and Calvin W. Braxton Sr. as vice chairmen for 2015 during its regular meeting held in New Orleans.
Tarver, a Shreveport native and resident of Baton Rouge, is SU System president emeritus and was appointed to the SU Board in January of 2013 by Gov. Bobby Jindal. Tarver has held academic and administrative positions at the national, state and local levels. The former SU System president has conducted international development activities England, France and several African nations including Ghana, Haiti, Mozambique, Nigeria and South Africa.
"Thanks to my colleagues for their support. I want to do a lot to make Southern a finer institution for all," said Tarver.
Tarver is the first individual to serve as a university president and then a member of the board who is now chairman.
Braxton, a Nachitoches residents, is president and chief executive of Braxton Land Company and president Nachitoches Ford-Lincoln-Mercury. He was appointed to the board by Gov. Jindal in June of 2011.
"SU is my heart. I want to do what we need to do to move forward to make a better SU," said Braxton.
The Board of Supervisors of Southern University manages and supervises the entire Southern University System.
