Study says 30 street gangs at large in Baton Rouge
BATON ROUGE - A new study has identified 30 street gangs in East Baton Rouge Parish with more than 500 members and found a large percentage of killings during a two-year period involved gang members.
The Advocate reports that researchers for the Baton Rouge Area Violence Elimination project reported that 43 percent of the 199 murders occurring between September 2010 and October 2012 were gang-involved.
An additional 12 percent of the killings were found to "likely" be "gang-member involved murders," a classification that includes homicides in which the victim or suspect is a known gang member.
That classification also includes cases in which specific gang affiliation was undetermined but the circumstances fit the criteria for gang violence.
