Students from Gonzales Primary School in Ascension Parish made a special donation to the American Red Cross.
They raised more than $2,000 to help earthquake survivors in Haiti.
The idea came from fifth grader Gavin Ahearne. He asked his principal if he could raise money at the school after watching stories about the earthquake on the news.
Gavin and several friends got their classmates to donate $1 for things like free-dress days or snacks in class. They even sold concessions at recess.
Gavin was surprised by his success, saying, "I thought maybe (I'd raise) $500, I didn't think I'd make $2,000."
His dad and his teachers say Gavin's enthusiasm was infectious and inspiring.
