DENHAM SPRINGS - Elton "Nitro" Knight lost everything early Sunday morning when a fire consumed his home, leaving him and his ten family members with nothing as the holidays approach.
It's why Denham Springs High, where Knight is a Junior, decided to chip in to help, allowing students to have a "free dress" day if they donated two dollars.
"They just told us to bring two dollars and you could wear jeans or you could bring more money as donations. Most people brought more money and we raised $4,300," said Madison Jolie, who donated to the cause.
Knight was overwhelmed by the response from his fellow classmates.
"It brought tears to my eyes, I really didn't think they could raise that much money, I didn't think anybody cared about me that much, it's why I love this school so much, I really do," said Knight.
Knight is living with his father until his family can find a place to live, though, he plans to continue playing basketball for the Yellow Jackets.
