PAINCOURTVILLE - About a dozen homes and businesses were destroyed in Assumption Parish during Tuesday’s bout of severe storms that brought tornadoes to the area.

The intersection of La 70 and La 1 remains closed following the weather event. People were trapped in homes, but they’ve been rescued by the fire department as of early Tuesday evening.

Building debris, downed power lines and utility poles still cover the highway until crews can clear them.

The above image was taken around 13 miles from Pierre Part. Around 3,000 customers were still without power as of 4:45 p.m. in the immediate area.

A water tower was also downed as the tornado passed by. News 2's Meteorologist Josh Eachus believes the tornado that passed through this area may have been the strongest one of the day, but that is a preliminary opinion.
