Storm damage closed Old Hammond Wednesday
BATON ROUGE - Lightning and heavy downpours moved into the area late Wednesday afternoon, causing traffic headaches and widespread power outages.
Old Hammond Highway, between Sherwood and Flannery, was closed early in the evening rush and remained closed late into the night because lanes were blocked by a downed tree. State transportation experts told drivers to plan on using an alternate route for a while.
Drivers were also warned of delays on I-10, I-110 and I-12 until 7 p.m because of the weather situation and traffic that grew as the weather worsened.
Entergy reported nearly 3,000 customers without power in East Baton Rouge just before 5 p.m. and about 2,000 outages near New Roads. Hundreds of customers in Zachary and Baker were also affected as the weather moved through.
DEMCO said about 2,000 customers were without power in Ascension Parish. Outage reports were trickling in from Livingston Parish after 5 p.m. that indicated more than 100 customers were in the dark.
A few hundred customers remained in the dark into 10 p.m. Wednesday.
Pat Shingleton reported showers and storms are expected until about 10 p.m. tonight.
