Stores worry other synthetic drugs could be seized
BATON ROUGE – Stores that sell substances labeled “synthetic marijuana” tell News 2 they’re changing their practices, after fake bath salts that gave a cocaine-like high were outlawed in Louisiana.
Gov. Bobby Jindal signed an emergency order this week making products like “Cloud 9” illegal to have, make or sell in the state. Poison control officials said doctors had been seeing many cases of people overdosing on it and having suicidal thoughts, hallucinations and other dangerous symptoms.
Some synthetic marijuana products have also been made controlled substances, but new versions of the substance have a different chemical makeup to get around the law. Stores that sell it are also keeping less of it in stock, so if it’s made illegal and seized by authorities again they won’t lose as much money.
Rob Krieger spoke to store owners and authorities about these other synthetic drugs, and will have more on News 2 at 5.
