GONZALES - Ascension Parish is aggressively targeting the sale of synthetic marijuana. This comes after a number of students were sent to the hospital for using the synthetic drug.
The synthetic drug is used as a marijuana-type substance, it's marketed and sold in stores as incense or potpourri.
The drug is constantly changing, making it impossible for law makers to keep up. Store owners have been warned by Ascension Parish authorities, that any death or injury caused by synthetic marijuana sold at their store could result in serious repercussions.
Chief Criminal Deputy Tony Bacala warns parents about the dangers of the product.
"Illegal, or legal. You never know which one you're getting," said Bacala. "You don't know if you're getting legal or the illegal because you never have a clue what's in these things."
One man who tried the synthetic drug, says he'll never do it again.
"Your heart rate is really fast, it feels like it's beating out your chest," he said. "You can hardly control what you're doing. It's terrible."
