Storage dome collapse damages Nucor iron plant
CONVENT - The sheriff of St. James Parish said what was intially reported as an explosion at the Nucor iron plant near Convent turned out to be a collapsed storage dome.
Sheriff Willy Martin said one of three domes at the site collapsed due to a structural failure. He said everyone at the plant was accounted for, and there were no injuries.
The $750 million iron plant was in the final stages of preparation before going into full production. It's the first part of a $3.4 billion steel complex planned for the area.
