Statue of Tom Benson unveiled in New Orleans
NEW ORLEANS - Gov. Bobby Jindal, Mayor Mitch Landrieu and other leaders of city and state were on hand outside of the Mercedes-Benz Superdome for the unveiling of a statue erected to honor team owner Tom Benson.
Tom Benson was at the event in the flesh as the statue was revealed. It casts his likeness with the Vince Lombardi Trophy hoisted above his head as the owner did when the Saints rolled the Colts to win Super Bowl XLIV.
Speakers at the unveiling praised Benson for his dedication to keeping professional sports teams in the comparatively small New Orleans market, especially in the wake of Katrina's 2005 devastation.
Benson has owned the Saints since the mid-1980s with the team excelling during his reign. Their only playoff appearances and 2009 Super Bowl victory have all been under Benson's ownership.
