The Louisiana Civil Service Commission has officially signed off on a new pay plan for most state employees.
The plan involves a three to six percent pay raise based on employees' job performance. Most workers have been receiving an almost automatic, four percent merit raise in recent years.
Merit raises have been under attack from some state lawmakers and members of a streamling government commission.
Some civil service workers are concerned the new plan will result in politics and favoritism being factors for pay raises. Civil service leaders say last minute changes added to the pay plan call for more monitoring of the system.
