State won't install light, could improve intersection

GALVEZ- A stretch of LA 42 deemed dangerous by residents, won't get a traffic signal installed by the state because DOTD says the traffic count doesn't meet the standards needed for a signal.

Sheri Thompson, 56, was killed during a head on collision Thursday morning on LA 42 near Joe Sevario Road.

"People are pulling in and out of these neighborhoods, these are our families that are getting killed out here, it's unnecessary, it's absolutely unnecessary," said Julie Day, who lives near the intersection.

Day has asked the state for help in the past, but because the number of cars that pass through the intersection is low, it won't install a light.

"I think it would definitely help, coming up to a stop light, you use extreme caution, right here, you're taking chances every time you cross the intersection, every time you cross 42 you're taking a chance," said Adrian Bourgeois, who lives near the intersection.

DOTD will, however, include the intersection in a feasibility study that will look at intersections along LA 42 to make safety improvements.
