State reports flood of false tax returns
BATON ROUGE - Louisiana revenue officials said they've discovered more than 2,000 attempts to file fraudulent tax returns through popular tax software this year.
The Department of Revenue said 2,011 returns filed through Intuit / TurboTax have been filed as fraudulent.
"To our knowledge, our systems at the Louisiana Department of Revenue have not been compromised, but we want to alert all taxpayers who may have been victimized and had their personal information comprised by TurboTax, so they can take the steps needed to protect themselves," said Secretary of Revenue Tim Barfield.
The information was not stolen through the softward but instead, theives used personal information taken from somewhere to file fraudulent returns.
The secretary said his department contacted the IRS and will work with other states with similar attempted fraud to make sure Louisiana citizens are protected. Intuit also stopped all state e-filings temporarily while the company sorted the issue, which is reportedly affecting 18 states and potentially tens of thousands of returns. Late Friday, the company resumed filing state returns.
"We will continue to monitor this situation closely, and will work diligently to ensure we do everything possible to protect taxpayer's information and to ensure they receive the refunds they deserve," Barfield said.
Barfield said the state began accepting returns on Jan. 20 and began processing them Feb. 3. State refunds are scheduled to begin going out around Feb. 24.
People concerned about the security of their personal information provided to TurboTax should contact the company at 1-800-944-8596. Taxpayers may verify the current status of their state income tax return by going to the Department of Revenue's website.
