State police to train new troopers
BATON ROUGE - State police will begin training new troopers early next year.
Trooper ranks have dropped from over 1,150 in 2009 to less than 950 today.
Budget problems have kept the state from adding any new officers, but the legislature set aside $5 million for the training in the last session.
The money comes from enhanced debt collection efforts by the newly-created Office of Debt Recovery.
The training academy is scheduled to begin in January. It will train 50 people over a 19 week period. The Louisiana State Police says it's the first cadet class since September 2008.
