BATON ROUGE - Newly-constructed cable barriers between Baton Rouge and New Orleans are working, according to Louisiana State Police.
At least five sections of the barrier between Sorrento and Baton Rouge collapsed after distracted drivers ran into them. Construction on the $2 million project began last fall.
"I think they are a great idea," Lashia McKay said. "If someone runs off the road or goes and runs off and causes a collision on the other side, it could help."
State Transportation Leaders said the contractor hasn't even turned the project over to the state yet, and already repairs have to be made because of crashes in those areas.
Since the installation of the cable barriers, no one has been killed from a crossover crash according to State Police.
"I think it's a good idea," Ken McLean said.
"I feel a little better," Jared Otts said.
The damaged sections of the cable barrier will be repaired in two days.
