State Police investigate officer shooting
LAFAYETTE - Louisiana State Police say a Lafayette police officer shot and killed a driver who backed into him at a traffic stop.
A news release identifies the dead man as 46-year-old Anthony J. Sonnier of Lafayette.
Trooper Stephen Hammons says the officer pulled Sonnier over about 11:20 p.m. Friday. He says Lafayette police asked state police to investigate, and the investigation is continuing.
Lafayette Police Chief Jim Craft says the officer had stopped a vehicle belonging to a 74-year-old stabbing victim who said a friend had attacked him without apparent reason. He said the officer is on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure any time an officer shoots somebody.
