State plans detours for sinkhole highway
BAYOU CORNE- State transportation leaders told people who live near the growing sinkhole in Assumption Parish, there are plans to establish a viable road should the main artery for the community be jeopardized by the disaster.
There are "two potential detour routes, currently at the feasibility study stage," Indira Parrales with DOTD told WBRZ News 2 in an email. Those routes are located north of LA 70 between Gumbo St. and LA 69, 700 feet or further from the existing Highway 70.
The sinkhole can be seen from Highway 70, and there are concerns about its integrity.
"Additionally, bypass routes are being considered to provide long-term solutions should LA 70 be closed," Parrales said.
