The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission has delayed the 2010-11 oyster season for public seed grounds east of the Mississippi River and in Hackberry Bay to help protect and enrich oysters for future harvest.
The areas were originally scheduled to open Nov. 15.
State biologists say data indicates the presence of significant numbers of oyster spat - young oysters less than an inch in length - in some areas east of the river.
Officials say harvest was postponed to allow those juvenile oysters time to mature.
Most of the remaining oyster areas will open as scheduled in mid-November.
